Mt Gillen in the morning

So, after 6 months in Alice Springs I’ve finally undertaken one of the many initiation rituals associated with moving to town. Climbing Mount Gillen. Now Mt Gillen isn’t a mountain, more of a high point on the range that surrounds Alice Springs. The MacDonnell ranges run east and west from town in a great curving arc. From the top you get a great view in all directions, and can also […]

Keeping Track of Adventures

Hi Everyone, I’ve decided that blogs frustrate me because you can never find a page you want when you want it. For that reason I have created a new page called my Adventure Directory, where I intend to keep links to all the cool adventures friends and I have had over the years. I may even include some posts from my favourite blogs, like twobreakfasts,  Tandem Travellers and Northern Walker. […]

Alice Springs Eclipse Photos

Just a few days ago my home town of Alice Springs was graced with a visit by the Sun and Moon at exactly the same time. Unfortunately, like all siblings, they couldn’t agree who was more important. After days of arguments the Moon got one up on the Sun and blocked out its light early on Wednesday morning. I’d heard that the fight as coming to a head, so a spontaneous […]

Simpsons Gap Evening with Gregor and Mikey

Simpsons Gap from a distance.

This wallaby decided to give us an example of how it climbs.

Mikey my fellow photographer.

The waterhole at Simpsons Gap still has water in it 8 months after the last decent rain.

The colour of the pinnacle at Simpsons Gap is amazing as the sunsets. It is impossible to do the view justice.

The view of the West MacDonnell Ranges through the trees.

What is there to say?

Simpsons Gap Dinner

Tonight I decided it would be a good idea to ride out to Simpsons Gap after work and heat up dinner while watching the sunrise. I often have ideas like this but rarely follow through due to my annoying sense of something. Luckily the warm sunshine, mild breeze and beautiful sky convinced me that it would be worth the effort of packing up a stove and some leftover lasagna on […]

East Side Mountain Biking

Smooth trails, great company and a patched up side wall. What could possibly make for a better day of mountain biking then that combination? Today I went out riding with a group of keen riders from the Central Australian Rough Riders to explore the trails on the east side of Alice Springs, including some freshly cut trails that most people hadn’t ridden before. The riding was generally smooth with early […]

Alice Springs Bicycle Film Festival

Last night was the Alice Springs Bicycle Film Festival, which was held as part of the Alice Springs Ecofair. The outdoors festival was one of the most relaxed film festivals I’ve been too and deserves recognition for how good a show they put on. Held in the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens the films were projected on a giant inflatable screen, while views sat on chairs around fire drums and and […]

Brisbane to Alice Springs

As many of you know I recently decided to move to Alice Springs in central Australia. I’ll be starting a new job next week, but for the moment I’m still enjoying free time. To get to Alice is a fair trek and over the past week Clare and I drove more than 3,600km and used something like 380 litres of fuel. The route is pretty varied with some long 600+ […]
